Low Self-Esteem Therapy
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem refers to how individuals view and feel about themselves. Self-perceptions; whether they be positive, neutral or negative, will have an impact on how an individual interacts with others, makes decisions, and lives life in general. When an individual has more negative self-perceptions than positive ones, it can be said that they have a low self-esteem. Individuals with low self-esteem tend to frequently compare themselves to others and feel inadequate or unsatisfied with their own lives.
What can I do?
Low self-esteem often becomes a personality trait; it affects who you are and how you move through life. Therefore, some people may feel as though there is nothing that can be done to change it. Thankfully, this is not true. Changing your self-perceptions can be difficult, but through counselling, a therapist can empower you to re-evaluate how you look at yourself, encourage you to make positive changes in your life that strengthens your self-worth and confidence, and to learn to accept the things you cannot change. For further information on how therapy can help with issues of low self-esteem or to schedule an appointment, please contact Dr. Chow.
How will counselling help?
The psychologist will provide a safe, comfortable and non-judgemental space where she can help you explore your individuality and guide you in recognizing your negative self-thoughts. The psychologist will also help you restructure the way that you think about yourself so that it is more realistic, allowing you to better manage criticism from others and be happy with who you are as an individual. Additionally, she will teach you how to identify and meet your individual needs through assertiveness training and can guide you in developing personal goals and strategies to achieve those goals.
